New Technology for Steel Awards 2011 as SAISC Calls for Entries

The Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) has called for entries for Steel Awards 2011.

SAISC communications manager, Renee Pretorius, says that this year the Institute is using social media networks such as Facebook and YouTube to give the projects of Steel Awards 2011 more exposure.  The special Steel Awards website’s online entry facility will be easier to use this year and the SAISC encourages all nominators to go this route.

“This year there will also be a photographic competition with the winning photographs prominently displayed at the Awards. “Photographic excellence is crucial in the judging and post-publicity processes and we want to encourage entrants to provide excellent visual support to their entry documents,” says Pretorius.

“We try to give publicity to everyone and top quality pictures are crucial to this endeavour,” she says.

Pretorius says that the overall standard of last year’s Awards was exceptional. “Every year the quality of the entries has improved and we expect the same this year. There are many outstanding steel construction projects eligible for Steel Awards 2011 and we look forward to all of them entering,” says Pretorius.

She emphasised that size is not a necessary criterion. “Big or small we look for whether a project expresses the essence of what can be achieved with steel.”

As usual there are no fixed categories in which to enter projects, with the exception of the Tubular and Light Steel Frame categories. Judges decide on categories based on the actual entries received every year. Last year’s categories offer a guideline: Infrastructure, Community Development, Mining and Industrial, Architectural Structures, Bridges, Tubular Structures and Light Steel Frame Building.
Steel Awards 2011, the 30th Steel Awards, will be held simultaneously in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Cape on September 15th 2011. The venue in Gauteng will again be Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park. The other regions’ venues will be confirmed shortly.

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES MAY 6th 2011
