Steel Awards 2012 – All the Winners
From ground-breaking chimneys at a leading Power Station in Limpopo Province to a brilliant restoration of a medical facility in Hillbrow; from a beautiful pedestrian bridge in Bloemfontein to an innovative head office in Pretoria; from an aesthetic masterpiece on Westcliff Ridge in Johannesburg, to the new home of Architecture at the University of the Free State and a complex and beautiful canopy in KZN, this year’s Steel Awards reflected the outstanding quality of the steel construction industry in all its diversity. “We congratulate the winners, but emphasise the exceptional quality of all the entries, said Dr Hennie de Clercq, executive director of the Southern African Institute of Steel (SAISC).
He also praised the use of steel at overall winner Medupi. “One may question whether or not anybody should build a coal-fired power station in this day and age, but once somebody has decided to do so, the least that can be done is to use the greenest possible materials and construction processes. Steel then becomes the logical material.”
Steel Awards 2012, the 31st Steel Awards, hosted by the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) with the Aveng Group as main sponsor, was held simultaneously at Emperor’s Palace in Gauteng, the Durban Botanic Gardens in KwaZulu Natal and at Kirstenbosch in the Cape, on September 6th 2012.
The Aveng Group was the main sponsor of Steel Awards 2012. Other sponsors were: Macsteel (table décor sponsor); Association of Steel Tube and Pipe Manufacturers of South Africa (Tubular Award sponsor), Cadex SA (photo competition sponsor); Stewarts & Lloyds (Light Steel Frame Award sponsor); and partner sponsors: B&T Steel, Cosira Group, EVRAZ Highveld Steel and Vandium, Eazi Sales and Service, Genrec Engineering, NJR Steel Holdings, and Tubular Holdings.
